AVIS DERBY 2007

EXTRACTS FROM HQ/HORSE QUARTERLY MARCH/APRIL 2008

“2007 Statistics

Of the 154 horses entered in the open classes, the majority are imported (63) with the Thoroughbreds (44) and SA Wambloods (SWAs) (43) being quite evenly represented and Namibian breeders producing four.

So, although the imported horses were by far in the majority, the top three performers throughout the previous three days excluded any European imports.

Twenty two horses paraded for the main event, the 2007 Avis South African Derby:  eleven imported horses, two Namibian Warmbloods, five South African bred Warmbloods and four Thoroughbreds. Top qualifier was the Namibian Warmblood, Midgard Glarmour, owned and ridden by Paige Schiller and bred by Midgard Stud.  This horse is out of the same dam as Mirja Horsthemke’s Midgard Grannus”

News 2007

Dear Riders, Breeders and Horse Friends

I am attempting to organise a Namibian excursion for the well known South African Equestrian photographer, Hennie van den Berg (PRESTIGE PHOTOGRAPHY) for the beginning of May 2008.

Hennie is one of the best horse photographers in South Africa and attends almost every big event (Show jumping, Dressage, Showing etc.) all over the country.

Should anyone be interested in exploiting his services, please contact me as soon as possible.  The arrangements, itinerary and costs involved are subject to your responses, as his airfare will be shared by all interested parties.  Thus, the more people involved the cheaper for all!!

Keep in mind that everyone involved will be responsible for, and will have to coordinate transportation for Hennie to and from the different points of destination.  He will be based 80km east of Windhoek at Farm Bodenhausen, and I trust that those staying far away would provide accommodation at no cost.

Warmblood Breeders: Should Hennie take photos of your stallions, it will be ready in time for publication in the stallion register, compiled by Lynda Rabie.

I believe that this is a great opportunity for all of us, as we would have superior quality photographs for our websites / brochures / or other advertising means. Please, don't let this prospect pass, contact me without delay.  I would like to start planning as soon as possible.

We wish to congratulate Claratal Stud to their new imported Stallion Bellini Go.

Bellini Go impressed the judges with his type and appearance, and also with his impulsion and movement. Noble, with an expressive posture and flawless interior Bellini Go is always friendly and alert.
The highly-decorated premier mare, Belle Petite by Habicht, produced a stallion who thoroughly secures the breeding values of his forebears.
Bellini Go is a highly noble stallion with an unmistakably Trakehner exterior. His ground-covering, efficient movement is impressive. At his keuring he showed energetic impulsion and light-footed movement, with good suspension. He was the only three year old keured in Ausfeldt and he impressed with his capacity to jump.
He passed his stallion licensing in Prussendorf 2002  and gained marks like Character 8.0, Readiness to perform  9.0, Constitution 8,5 Rittigkeit 7,96 and jumping abillety 8.0.

Inseminations 07/11/2007

On the 16 - 19 October we had our first fresh semen program on Seeis. 16 mares were prepared with Ovarian Steroids and unfortunately 3 mares showed no heat and 5 had multiple follicles. I think we started the program to early and the condition of the mares was not good enough - no green in the veld. All mares what were stabled showed good heat.

We have 8 pregnancies out of this batch ( 2 mares not examined at this stage)

The good news is that the semen tapping of the stallions was very successful.
(Consuelo, Nile Game, Ulrich and Connoisseur

I would like to start a new synchronization program on Saturday the 17 November. The mares must be injected every day till the 26 November and than delivered to Seeis on the Monday the 3 December. I can do fresh or frozen semen. For fresh semen we will have Consuelo, Ulrich, Connoisseur and Nile Game available. Please contact me if you are interested at wspath@namibnet.com.

Thank You,

Dr. W. Spath

Synchronisation in mares:

Inject for 10 days 3 ml Ovarian Steroids. On day 10 inject also 1 ml estrumate
Day 18 the mares must be examined and prepared for insemination. If follicle is big inseminate on day 19 otherwise on day 20.

Inspection and licensing 2007

This year’s licensing took place at the end of  May 2007/beginning of June 2007.

We had been fortunate again to have Mr.Cord Wassmann, retired chairperson of the Hannoverian licensing committee, with us to act as chief judge of their licensing committee.

Licensing took  place at the farms Voigtskirch, Locarno and  Midgard.  The Central licensing were held at Reitgemeinschaft KleinWindhoek at the Avis Dam.

A lot of breeders took the opportunity to participate at the central licensing to show their breeding stock to a broader public.

For the  first year now it has been made compulsory for stallions to get licensed at that  central place, to better draw a comparison between the stallions to judge.

In total 3 of the six presented  stallions got their license certificate.

The winner in the stallion licensing is “Okongava Moana“by “Pepino/Voigtland Adjudant“

The overal winner in the mares licensing is “Locarno Montana“ by “Acclaim(Accord-Zeus) -“Graveur“ –“Montezuma xx“

It was a pleasure to have Mr and Mrs. Wassmann as our guests and Mr.Wassmann gave valuable advice to the licensing committee and breeders.
